Clovis, King of all the Franks

As the Roman Empire crumbled and the province of Gaul was left to its own fate, a leader named Clovis stepped forward to assert himself as the official ruler of the region. The son of Childeric I and a founder of the Merovingian dynasty, Clovis was successful in uniting the Franks into one kingdom, and establishing France as a Christian country with his personal conversion from paganism to Catholicism, thus instigating a new era in Western European history.
Although a baptized Christian, Clovis was certainly not a pacifist. Reigning during a period in which chaos and violence were rampant (they were called the Dark Ages for a reason), rulers were obligated to exercise levels of harshness in order to maintain authority and impose law, and Clovis was definitely an effective ruler. His military victories and policies brought his people under one banner, and created the foundation for a nation.
