Description
During the Battle of Shiloh (April 1862), Ulysses S. Grant dispatched gunboats – the USS Tyler and USS Lexington – to support his infantry attacking Confederate flanks on this spot along the river. Two months earlier these same ships, part of the Western Flotilla, the name given to the Union’s brown-water naval squadron, had helped Grant in his siege upon Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River.
