Upon the Shoulders of Giants

Sir Isaac Newton is believed to have modestly stated, "If I have seen further than other men, it is because I have stood upon the shoulders of giants." Similar words could be attached to one of the greatest animators that ever lived, Vladimir 'Bill' Tytla.
Bill Tytla worked for Disney during the Golden Age of Animation. He contributed to several shorts during the 1930s, most notably the Brave Little Tailor in which he animated the dimwitted - albeit imposing - giant that does battle with the heroic Mickey Mouse. When Disney embarked on the enterprise of feature-length, animated pictures, Bill was called upon to use his extraordinary skills to bring characters to life. Because of his knack for drawing physically large and formidable individuals, Bill animated Stromboli in Pinocchio, and for Fantasia the magician Yen Sid in 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice' and the demonic Chernabog in 'Night on Bald Mountain.' Following his work on the advocacy film 'Victory Through Air Power,' Bill decided to depart the studio, a move that he would regret for years afterward. Had he decided to remain with Disney, it is likely that he would have been regarded as the "Tenth Old Man" by Walt.
